I recently discovered Beautycounter, a safer skin care and cleaner cosmetics company out of Santa Monica, CA. I had heard about them here and there on social media but hadn’t personally known anyone who had bought any of their products.
They’re a newer company with nearly 130 products across skin care, color cosmetics, advanced anti-aging, kids, baby and personal care collections. Besides having delightful products and a worthy mission, their stuff works well. It’s the trifecta of skin care, folks. Let me explain why I find this is so exciting!
I’ve been a slacker when it comes to my skin care routine. Most of my choices growing up were based on pretty labels, cheap prices, and familiar brands. Face wash would get tossed in my shopping cart along with magazines, Cadbury eggs, and shaving cream.
My skin was typical for a young adult – I had an oily t-zone and breakouts but never dealt with any severe issues. I’d bounce around from brand to brand but was never impressed enough to stay consistent with any one.
Fast forward to 6 years ago when I was trying to get pregnant. I cleaned up my diet dramatically, but was less educated about what was going on my skin. A beauty product minimalist, I figured less is more and that I’d be ok with that. When I learned I was pregnant, I researched safe options for body lotions and baby shampoos but found very few affordable options. Greener alternatives were hard to find online and even harder in stores where I could see and smell before buying. So I DIYed things like deodorant or just used coconut oil as a lotion and argan oil on my face and split ends. Simple and done.
Not very proactive, however.
Feeling overdue for a “grown up” skin care routine.
Cue 2 children later and here I am with skin that is dry and dehydrated, has fine lines and large pores and I swear I’m starting to see jowls on my jaw line! I’m not a spring chicken anymore and my lack of consistency in products and routine has caught up to me. I can practically see 40 on the horizon! I should get facials and peels and use fancy creams!
Researching how to amp up my skin care game, I listed out my lengthy criteria – must deeply hydrate, plump fine lines, minimize larger pores, smooth out bumpy texture, increase elasticity, be gluten sensitive and fairly “green”. Throw in factors like breastfeeding, being hyperthyroid and disliking a heavy Rose scent and I felt sure I would turn up zero search results. Did I mention said products must not cost an arm and a leg?
What I found over and over was I needed a retinol or retinol product to get my desired results. It appears as Retinol, vitamin A, retinyl acetate, retinyl palmitate, all-trans retinoic acid, tretinoin on the label. Retinol is a potent form of synthetic vitamin A that increases cell turnover to restore elasticity and decrease wrinkles and dark spots. Sounded great!
However, when I checked it against the EWG’s database, they suggest that it could (ironically) speed up the development of cancerous skin tumors when exposed to the sun. And possibly cause developmental and reproductive toxicity. EWG gave it a 9 on a 1-10 scale (I aim for 4 and under). It’s also not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing. Womp womp. Although some sources say retinol products are safe for most people in appropriate quantities, I decided it wasn’t worth it. Back to square one.
Anti-aging solution for breastfeeding moms
Not only could I not use retinol products while nursing but breastfeeding and wacky hormones left my skin super dehydrated. No matter what I tried – drinking more water, water with Himalayan salt, coconut water, argan or jojoba oils, masks, exfoliation, etc. – I would wake up the next day with dry skin all over again. It highlighted my fine lines and made me look more tired than I already was.
Researching once more, this time for products without retinol, I came across Beautycounter. There were several other green brands I discovered, but this one was set apart because:
They’re mission based. Beautycounter’s goal is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. A wife and mom, like many of us, founded the company because she wanted better options for her family and others’.
Did you know…
- Women use an average of 12 personal care products a day which can mean exposure to hundreds of chemicals just in the course of a morning beauty routine.
- The FDA does not require that cosmetic ingredients be assessed for safety before they go on to the market, and they cannot issue a product recall.
- 1938 was the last year Congress passed a major federal law regulating cosmetics.
While the company lobbies in Washington for tighter regulations in the beauty industry, Beautycounter consultants work to educate the public on what is in conventional products.
They use top-notch ingredients. They’re committed to a health and safety standard that goes well beyond what is legally required in the United States. This includes the over 1,400 chemicals banned or restricted in personal care products by the European Union, plus additional chemicals screened by Beautycounter and found to be concerning. Beautycounter works to source ingredients from non-GMO, sustainable sources, many of which are organic. 80% of their ingredients are natural or plant-derived, so I like that I’m getting the added benefits of those natural compounds. They make it easy. Like anyone, I get research fatigue. Constantly trying to find the best sunscreen, the best anti-aging cream, the best organic eye cream, the best sulfate free shampoo. My mental capacity is strapped these days managing life as a new mom of two and doing it on reduced sleep. Trying to piecemeal a collection of products for a full regimen seemed daunting. Beautycounter offers a complete lineup designed to work together to take care of your daily needs. Plus weekly treatments like masks and mists. I don’t have to think about some harmful in my shampoo or face oil and that means several fewer decisions to make. A little goes a long way with their highly concentrated products so I have to shop less often!
Their products make me feel pampered. I’m picky about scents and I’m not joking when I say I wake up looking forward to using my morning products because of the way they smell and make my skin feel. I use the Rejuvenating line, their anti-aging line, and the light magnolia scent that comes from flower oil smells divine without being overwhelming. I’m obsessed with the luxurious feel of their products, like I’m taking a moment for myself each morning and before bed. For someone without a tub in the master bath to escape to, this self-care step is much needed!
Since using Beautycounter’s Rejuvenating line, my skin has felt hydrated (yay!) and supple and I can see a difference in my pores. Omega-rich natural oils and vitamin-rich fruit extracts are used in place of retinol and are clinically proven to work. I’ve been so impressed that I became a Beautycounter Consultant myself, so I can help spread the word on safer ingredients and positively impact people’s lives. I am already a Certified Health Coach for the same reason – because I love educating people and seeing them improve their lives in healthier ways. It’s a seamless integration for my lifestyle and my health coaching mission!

Charcoal Cleansing Bar
This is a best seller and I can understand why. Charcoal works to draw out impurities and coconut oil keeps your skin hydrated. I think using it morning and night every day would be too much for most people. It’s great for removing sunscreen and sweat to get an extra clean feeling. I use 2-3 times a week in the morning, rotating with my Rejuvenating Face Cleanser.
Rejuvenating Toner Pads
I think I’m most excited about these! I’ve noticed a difference in my pore size and the smoothness of my skin. Using these is a far better experience than the stinging alcohol pads I used in high school!
Rejuvenating Radiance Serum
Lightweight and quick to absorb, this is a powerhouse combo of vitamin C, fruit acids and marine extracts. I use a pea sized amount on my face after I wash and used the toner pads.
The No.2 Plumping Facial Oil
This has made such a difference in how my skin feels. It does what it says – plumps and moisturizes! I add a drop or two to the Rejuvenating Night Cream and I wake up with skin feeling as it should.
Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer
Essentially, my Holy Grail makeup product. It’s lightweight, even coverage, no nasty smell, doesn’t collect in fine lines and has SPF included! Plus it pulls double duty with hyaluronate to help hydrate skin while you wear it. I highly recommend. (I wear shade No.2)
I’m aiming to try all of Beautycounter’s products, but these are at the top of my list:
Really popular and buildable color. Perfect for someone like me who doesn’t wear lipstick per se, but wants more color. I’m going to try Currant for Fall!
Not only does it remove makeup and clean your skin, it’s ultra-moisturizing and you can leave it on overnight as a treatment. I’ve heard of other using it to smooth over their cuticles, elbows, and other dry patches. A great multi-tasker!
Volume & Shape Volumizing Mist
Since about 1/4 of my hair fell out with postpartum hormone changes, I’m impatiently looking for products to boost the volume of my remaining strands. I’m hoping this will give them some lift and fullness.
The entire Baby Collection
I tried the Kids shampoo, conditioner and body wash on my 4yo. son, and noticed his hair was smoother and shinier after one application. For my 7mo. old I’d love to try out the Baby line – Gentle All-Over Wash, Soothing Oil and Daily Protective Balm.
